Powell repeats as drag strip’s Sportsman champion

Craig Powell has repeated as champion in the Sportsman class of the Carl’s 4WD & Performance Center ET Bracket Series at WWTR’s drag strip. In fact, he is one of four drivers to back up 2022’s crowns with 2023 titles. (Other back-to-back champions include Dennis Pearson, Jon Tignor and Cohen Hale.)

Powell and his always-immaculate silver Monte Carlo won on September 3, 2023, to clinch the championship by 22 points over Joe Renaud.

The lifelong St. Louis resident who has been drag racing at WWTR since 1988. He’s a second-generation driver – his father raced and won at strips in Alton and Nashville in the 1950s and 1960s. He started bracket racing regularly in 2013 and won his first NHRA Wally trophy at WWTR’s 2021 NHRA.tv Challenge.

When he’s not racing, Powell is a manufacturing engineer who works on the F-15 Eagle fighter jet.
