Mother Nature tested us again. The day started sweltering hot, and just as gates were ready to open, a 30-minute thunderstorm dropped heavy rain across the property. But if there’s one thing racers and staff at World Wide Technology Raceway know how to do, it’s adapt. The WWTR track staff jumped straight into action, drying, scraping and re-prepping the surface after all their hard work earlier that morning. Their dedication meant we only saw a short delay before the night’s racing began. Big thanks to the crew for making sure the program didn’t just happen — it thrived.
By 7 p.m., engines were fired and the chase for the coveted NHRA Speed for All Wally trophy was on. The pits were buzzing, competition was fierce, and despite the heat and weather curveballs, the racers were locked in and ready to put on a show.
Gangsta 28’s- A New Face on Top
The Gangsta 28’s (G28) class brought serious small-tire action, and in the finals it was newcomer Ryan Hendrickson in his beautiful hatchback Foxbody taking on veteran Brandon Stokes. Ryan came out swinging all night, carrying the front wheels through the 1/8 mile and leaving nothing on the table. In the end, Ryan sealed the deal, scoring his first WWTR win and etching his name into the Gangsta 28’s history book.
Small Tire Limited- A Family Affair
The Small Tire Limited (STL) program has become one of the hottest growing classes at WWTR, and this event proved it with a strong 18-car field. Fittingly, it all came down to family in the finals — points leader Matt Phillips lined up against his brother, the 2024 STL champ Corey Phillips. Matt on a true 26″ tire, showed the Midwest that the Phillips crew can run with anyone, on any setup. Matt cut a sharp light, Corey put a little too much into “Blue Waffle,” and broke out — giving Matt the win, the Wally and another notch on his already dominant season.

Street Car- Packed Fields, New Winners
If there was ever proof that Street Car Index racing (SC) is alive and thriving in the midwest, this was it. A massive 32-car field was broken down into four groups of eight — A, B, C, and D — each packed with first-timers, newcomers and seasoned regulars. The action was relentless, with everything from drag radial warriors who drove to the track in the rain, to highly tuned index machines hunting perfection clipping hundredths withing their respected ETs.
- Group A: Points leader Kyle “Gator” Cibrowski was back in the finals, but this time he faced off with one of WWTR’s own, Chris “Jersey” McCrossan, part of the WWTR N/T Racer Relations team. McCrossan piloted his Foxbody Mustang “the Pale Whale” with precision, going A-to-B and claiming his very first Wally in spectacular fashion.
- Group B: Newcomer Korey Eberhardt made a strong debut, earning a finals berth against the always-tough Connor Wilson. Connor’s experience shined through, as he powered his Mustang across the stripe first, locking in yet another win and proving why he’s a regular threat in the series.
- Group C: Making his season debut, Luke Welmon wheeled his Chevy II Nova like a veteran. He lined up against the ultra-consistent Rodger Thompson in the finals, and Luke didn’t flinch — driving his way to his first-ever competitive win and taking home a Wally in his very first outing of the year.
- Group D: This bracket came down to Adam Koehler and Paul Mancuso, with Paul representing the racing Mancuso brothers. A dynamic duo of class act brothers Adam and Paul showed why they have what it takes. Paul’s razor-sharp reaction times and consistent passes carried him to victory, proving the family team has what it takes to stand tall with hardware in hand.

The Street Car competition was some of the fiercest of the night, and every group delivered the kind of edge-of-your-seat racing that makes this program so special.
Plumbers & Gas Fitters Union Local 360 Presents: Phil’s Plumbing Street Bike and Garrison Security Group Super Comp MX Class presented by Multicare Specialists, RPM Specialties, and J&J Design.
Cars were not the only vehicles on track this weekend. In the Plumbers & Gas Fitters Union Local 360 Presents: Phil’s Plumbing Street Bike class, it was Janie Palm and her ’22 Hayabusa who took the class win over DeAndre Lewis and his ’02 Hayabusa. In the Garrison Security Group Super Comp MX Class presented by Multicare Specialists, RPM Specialties, and J&J Design, Arlow Charlton came out on top of the category with Brandon Childress right behind.

The Aug. 15 Wally Race was proof that when racers show up, anything can happen. Despite storms, heat and a late night that stretched into the early morning, the energy in the pits and on the track never dipped. Racers were hungry, fans were electric and the Wallys were hard-earned. Add in bonus specialty prizes and cash on top of the trophies, and it was a night to remember for the WWTR N/T Racers community.
Mark your calendars: Oct. 11th – The Spooky Spectacular. A cooler day race, packed with fall air, great prep and fast passes.
