F-15 Eagle fighter jet engineer Craig Powell scored four wins and the championship in 2022

January 27, 2023, St. Louis – Craig Powell is a lifelong St. Louisan who has been drag racing at World Wide Technology Raceway since 1988.

“In the beginning, I did some bracket racing over the years, but nothing serious,” said Powell. “It was mostly Test ‘n’ Tunes. I’m a second-generation driver – my dad raced and won the drag strips in Alton and Nashville in the 1950s and 1960s.

“I started bracket racing regularly in 2013 in the Sportsman class. I won my first NHRA Wally trophy at last year’s NHRA.tv Challenge at WWTR.”

Powell dominated the 2022 Sportsman season with four wins. He doubled up on the final weekend of bracket racing and handily grabbed the title by 116 points.

Powell is a manufacturing engineer who works on the F-15 Eagle fighter jet and this year he applied his skills to something a little less complicated – trusty 1985 Monte Carlo.

“I rebuilt the entire front suspension and steering on my 1985 Monte Carlo,” Powell added. “I finished it on Tuesday, got it aligned by racer Ron Hendrickson on Thursday, and won my first race of the season the following Saturday (June 18).”

World Wide Technology Raceway will honor its 2022 drag racing champions at the annual Carl’s 4WD & Performance Center ET Bracket Series banquet on Saturday, February 4. The banquet will be held at VFW Post 2866, located at 66 VFW Lane in St. Charles, Missouri.
